Murad II was the sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1421 to 1444 and again from 1446 to 1451.
Murad II's reign was a period of important economic development. Trade increased and Ottoman cities expanded considerably. In 1432, the traveller Bertrandon de la Broquière noted that Ottoman annual revenue had risen to 2,500,000 ducats, and that if Murad II had used all available resources he could easily have invaded Europe. Murad II laid siege to Constantinople in 1421and then proceeded to invade Venice, the Karamanid Emirate, Serbia and Hungary, capturing vast territories in the Balkans and annexing Serbia.
The akçe or akça refers to a silver coin which was the chief monetary unit of the Ottoman Empire. The word itself evolved from the word "silver or silver money". Three akçes were equal to one para. One-hundred and twenty akçes equalled one kuruş. The name akçe originally referred to a silver coin but later the meaning changed, and it became a synonym for money.
